Our marriage had been arranged by a friend. Suchitra lived with her parents in a town, 800 km. south east of Hyderabad where I lived. When I went to see her the first time, she was reading a book outside the house. As soon as she saw me and my friend, she ran into the house.

We talked to her family members and were invited to have breakfast with them in the morning.

So we returned the next day with a hope to see her.

Lo and behold, she walked into the room to serve breakfast. But when a houseful of people watching you, it becomes difficult to escape a glance from everyone. By the time it finally happened she was gone, never to come before me again. I had lost my opportunity; I could only see half of her face and trusted the Lord for the other half.

The negotiations were completed. I met her finally on our wedding day, beautiful and gorgeous. The Lord honored my trust.

Did you know that we had not taken our marriage vows at our wedding? We were married in a Lutheran church. That’s where Suchitra’s parents attended. The presbyter read out the vows for us as an agreement. We heard those vows from him and became committed to each other.

God knew it, didn’t He? We had not made any vows in the public and we needed to make one. It was such a joy to verbally make those vows before the church, exchange rings and flowers, cut the cake, and enjoy a meal together with those who stood by us over the years. It was also a special time of thanksgiving commemorating God’s love and faithfulness toward us.
